20 Oct 2026

Prof. CHEN Fang, Executive Deputy Director-General of the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), and Prof. JIA Gensuo, Deputy Director-General of CBAS, have been elected as 2026 Fellows of the International Science Council (ISC).

Established in June 2022, the ISC Fellowship is the council's highest individual honor, recognizing contributions to advancing science as a global public good. Fellows are nominated by ISC member organizations, current Fellows, its President and Chief Executive Officer, and partner networks. The 2026 cohort represents nearly 30 countries and a range of disciplines, sectors, and career stages. They will join more than 200 existing Fellows to advance international scientific cooperation.

CHEN specializes in disaster geographic remote sensing and digital Earth research, studying the geographic processes behind disasters and their impacts. He has developed remote sensing modeling methods and algorithms for interpreting disaster information from domestic and international satellite missions. He also independently developed a satellite-based disaster reduction software system for the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Integrating resources from 50 domestic and international satellites, his work has supported major national projects on natural hazard prevention and the use of these technologies in global disaster risk governance.

JIA is also a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the START Regional Center for East Asia. He studies the links between terrestrial ecosystems and climate change and has contributed to major international assessments, including the IPCC Assessment Reports and the UN Global Environment Outlook. His work also supports environmental research collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region.

ISC Fellows connect research with policy and practice and promote the open sharing of scientific knowledge in accordance with relevant rules and requirements. The election of CHEN and JIA recognizes their contributions to sustainable development and Earth sciences, as well as their engagement in international scientific cooperation.
