11 Feb 2026

The Sino-UK Joint Laboratory for Crop Pest and Disease Forecasting and Management passed its 2025 annual review at a meeting held in Beijing on February 9, marking steady progress in its first year of operation and setting the stage for deeper international collaboration and application expansion.

Established by the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS) and CAB International (CABI) as a CAS institute-level joint research unit, the laboratory focuses on addressing national strategic needs and global agricultural security challenges through aerospace information technology and international cooperation.

At the review meeting, an expert panel led by CAS Academician ZHANG Bing evaluated the laboratory's annual progress. The panel concluded that the laboratory had effectively implemented its 2025 work plan, maintained sound operational mechanisms, and achieved notable results in international cooperation, joint talent cultivation, and technology application. The laboratory was unanimously approved to pass the annual review.

According to the annual report delivered by Chinese Director HUANG Wenjiang, the laboratory has established stable collaboration mechanisms with CABI and expanded cooperation with international partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the University of Oxford, the University of Southampton, and Manchester Metropolitan University. Practical collaborations have been carried out in early-career researcher exchanges, joint training programs, and international technology promotion.

Research outcomes have been adopted by international organizations such as FAO and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), as well as by national and provincial authorities including the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Shandong Province.

The meeting summarized the laboratory's first-year achievements and clarified priorities for the next development phase. Moving forward, the laboratory will further deepen Sino-UK scientific cooperation, strengthen international talent cultivation, and accelerate the global application of its research results to support food security, ecological security, and sustainable development.
