Remote Sensing Data Products to Facilitate Hainan's Sustainable Development

Apr 26, 2023

A database titled “Hainan Resource and Environment Data Product”was released on the website of the CASEarth thematic data system and shared to the public free of charge, according to the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals.

Based on the self-developed remote sensing big data service platform, a research team from the Aerospace Information Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a series of remote sensing data products for resources and environment in Hainan Province by integrating remote sensing image radiation and geometric normalization processing algorithms as well as remote sensing monitoring models in vegetation ecology, water environment, agriculture, coastal zone, and urban environment.

Regarded as an example of China's reform and opening-up in the new era, the southern island province Hainan is the largest special economic zone, the largest pilot free trade zone and the only free trade port. It is also China’s largest "Tropical Treasure Land" with a total land area of 3.518 million hectares, accounting for 42.5% of the country’s tropical land area. Hainan has excellent ecological environment and rich natural resources. Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is one of the first five national parks established in China.

The data is expected to provide data support for the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, the realization of Hainan's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, and the evaluation of its sustainable development goals.
