UN Water Conference: 2-3 Billion People Facing Water Scarcity

The ongoing UN 2023 Water Conference in New York, the first UN conference on water of its kind since 1977, is highlighting the global water crisis where billions are affected. The crisis has been exacerbated by climate change, as disrupted water cycles cause irregular droughts and floods. Chinese scientists at the conference say their latest findings show weak points in the global water system but also offer some remedies.
GUO HUADONG, Director-General, International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) "We've seen water consumption from land surface evapotranspiration increase globally, and that demand for water has grown while water resources have been limited. This is a huge challenge for sustainable development, not to mention there are also problems with water quality. This UN conference has pointed out that 2 to 3 billion people are living with water scarcity right now. As much as one third of the world's urban population could face severe water scarcity in the near future. We hope our big data products presented to the UN could be used to monitor water quality and water resources distribution and analysis. Because to tackle the crisis we must fully employ the power of science and technology."
